Are Alpacas for me?

The alpaca is a hardy animal and an extremely efficient grazer.  It can make use of small acres of otherwise unproductive pasture. Apart from a handful of concentrated  feed per day for pregnant females and growing cria , in the winter, they will survive quite happily on good pasture at a stocking rate of five to eight animals per acre.

The alpaca produces a bright , luxurious  fine fleece from 16 microns upwards, with a smooth feel . Alpaca fleece is warmer and lighter than wool,  but stronger and far more durable with out the “itch factor” of wool.

The alpaca is a very independent animal which does not need many of the additional treatments associated with sheep, such as dipping. Alpacas need to be vaccinated against clostridial diseases and wormed. Their toe nails are trimmed when needed. Apart from that and the usual care and attention afforded all livestock, alpacas are pretty adept at looking after themselves.

The alpaca normally gives birth during daylight hours which is a real bonus and any female that starts labour late in the day needs extra vigilance on the part of the owner

The alpaca is a charming and very intelligent animal, which has been domesticated for over 6,000 years. They can quite easily be trained to walk on a head collar and lead-rein and are a placid quiet animal that is relatively easy to manage.

The alpaca lends itself to family interest. It’s gentle nature make it easy for children to take an interest in and be involved with.

Alpacas, being a herd animal, cannot be kept isolated, and therefore it is vital that the initial purchase be at least two animals.

That is if you can stop at two……….
